Étienne Fletcher was in the midst of writing a new French-language record when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Canada. He’s now exploring how to write and record the album with his bandmates, Sean McCannell and Gaelan Malloy, via correspondence. “I am looking into purchasing interfaces for the guys, so we can all continue collaborating while in isolation.”

For world-renowned Regina composer Laura Pettigrew, music is colour. Pettigrew has synesthesia, a condition in which one of the five senses – in this case, hearing – is perceived as other senses, such as sight. Every instrument is a different colour for her, and a completed orchestral piece is like a beautiful painting.

When Michael Thunderchild’s Grass Dance regalia was stolen several years ago, he and his family were devastated. He has been dancing powwow his entire life, and it is an important part of his personal and cultural identity. His partner, Randi Candline, who also dances powwow and creates elaborate beaded regalia for herself and her family members, received an Indigenous Peoples Art and Artists grant to right the wrong.

Royce Pettyjohn of the S.W. Sask. Oldtimers’ Museum and Archive in Maple Creek believes that learning about history is about more than reading books or looking at objects in a display case. “Heritage doesn’t exist in a vacuum or a fixed point in the past. Heritage is who we are as individuals and as communities today,” he says.

The Saskatchewan Arts Board gives a warm welcome to Carol Greyeyes, the newest addition to our team of Program Consultants.

Two artists living in rural Saskatchewan are among those whose work was purchased for the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Permanent Collection this fall. Both Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson of Saltcoats and Catherine Joa of Denare Beach are new to the collection.

Lévi Soulodre wrote an album based on poems his mother wrote before he was born.

Saskatoon musician Lévi Soulodre has always wanted to record a French-language alternative pop album to honour his Fransaskois roots. But he didn’t know what to write about, until a few years ago when his mother, Cheryl Georget Soulodre, showed him a poem she had written before he was born.

Local artists and Regina Catholic Schools worked together to provide diverse dance and music programming.

Some teachers consider the arts to be just an extension of education, an enrichment for students. Sophia Yannitsos wants to change that.
